Rotating Axis

She hopped between
brown patches
seeking a soft green
rest from the prickly
dead grass.

She found it
in the shade of the
weathered red bench
sun streaked
and lay down
backward and
face up and
watched the blue
infinity.

The little girl asked
her boundless space why
do they like
cloudless days?

and in response
white threads
spooled into puffs
full of motion
traveling

left? right?
west? east?
neither north
nor south.

The little girl thought
This must be the rotation
of the Earth.
I am witness
to Earth’s rotation.

She, unfazed and enlightened,
felt the yellow warmth
of the sun
perched behind her.

The clouds watched her
tiny below
and growing
infinitely smaller.

She traveled
while they stayed
in the forever blue
and black
fixed and
unfixed
the same as her
body on that soft green grass.
